LKAB, Sweden

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) is a Swedish mining company. The company mines iron ore at Kiruna and at Malmberget in northern Sweden. The company was established in 1890, and has been 100% state-owned since the 1950s. The iron ore is processed to pellets and sinter fines, which are transported by Iore trains (Malmbanan) to the harbours at Narvik and Luleå and to the steelmill at Luleå (SSAB).

The replacement project is at underground mine’s maintenance shaft. For LKAB project Amko installed 174 induction high bay fixtures of 300W (actual power consumption 330W) to replace High Pressure Sodium 1,000W (actual power consumption 1,200W) high bay fixtures. The height is 16 meters high.

In the table below you can see a comparison of the energy and costs that will be saved by choosing induction lighting.

Initial power readings suggest that;
1. Power consumption reduced by 73%, using 330W system wattage instead of 1,200W.
2. The annual electricity bill for the streetlight reduced by 73%.
3. Certainly not least the replacement costs will be taken out over 10 years period. Regular HPS lamps require replacement every 2 years, but induction lamps last up to 100,000 hours lifespan thus do not require replacement in this 10 years period.
4. Total cost in 10 years saved $ 1,733,485 and reduced 2,586 ton-CO2 in 10 years.
5. Induction lightings provide superior CRI.
