Acapulco Launches Energy-Efficient Public Street Light Project

On Thursday November 24th, 2011, the City of Acapulco, Guerrero officiated the program launch of new energy-efficient streetlighting. This grand event was held at the resort of Puerto Marquez, where more than 100 people, including merchants and residents, witnessed the City Council’s inauguration ceremony of this new induction lamp that will illuminate the city streets.

In the same day, the City had a cocktail party to welcome the implementation of the Project of Modernization of public lights which organized by Optimal Energy, who are national leaders in energy efficiency and project providers in the municipality.

On the same day, City Council celebrated the implementation of this Public Streetlight Modernization Project over a cocktail party, hosted by Optima Energia, the national leader in providing turnkey energy efficient programs to government municipalities and commercial/industrial entities.

During the event, participants thanked the City Council for this accomplishment as better lighting greatly enhances public safety so to promote tourism, benefiting more than 700,000 Acapulqueños.

This project will impact the environment by reducing COemissions by 6,973 tons; the equivalent of total annual electricity consumption for 790 families.

In addition to social and environmental benefits, the modernization of public streetlighting also creates an economic benefit to the Municipality, generating energy savings of 51% over current consumption. The savings generated fully cover the cost of this project without incurring debt, benefitting the citizens and visitors of this great tourist attraction.

With this major initiative, 44,490 modernize streetlights in Acapulco joined the global trend of upgrading to streetlights that emit white light. It provides enhanced lighting levels, deters crime, and increases image sharpness for security cameras.  The white light also increases the flow of pedestrians at night as well as improving the visibility of landscape and local architecture.

This project helps Acapulco government save USD44.28 million in 10 years. Compared with prior lamps, it saves 79% and 38,500 tons of CO2 saved over 10 years.
